Do you give a price before starting?

Yes. Quotes are free, and you'll get a clear price before any work starts, so there are no surprises on the bill. You can also get a free quote online by sending a few photos.

Do you do emergency call-outs?

Yes. Emergency call-outs are available 24/7. For anything that isn't urgent, quotes are free: call or send a few photos online.

Do you take on small jobs?

Yes. All jobs, big or small, from a dripping tap to a full bathroom.

I have a leak. What should I do while I wait?

Turn off the water at your stopcock. It's often under the kitchen sink, but can be in a cupboard, garage or where the supply enters the house. If water is near electrics, keep away and switch off at the consumer unit if it's safe to do so. Catch what you can with towels and buckets, then call.

Which areas do you cover?

Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Eastleigh & surrounding areas. If you're just outside, call and ask.

Heating

Heating

Why are my radiators cold at the top?

Usually there's air trapped in the radiator. Bleeding it with a radiator key often fixes it. If you have a sealed system, check the pressure gauge afterwards, as bleeding can lower it.

My heating pressure keeps dropping. Is that a problem?

On a sealed system, pressure that keeps falling usually means water is escaping somewhere: a leak, a weeping valve, or a fault such as the pressure relief valve or expansion vessel. It's worth getting it checked rather than repeatedly topping it up.

Can you help with my boiler?

Yes. I offer boiler servicing and installation, carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers.

You can check any engineer's registration at gassaferegister.co.uk.

Can you convert my old system to mains-pressure hot water?

Often, yes. This usually means replacing a vented cylinder and loft tanks with an unvented cylinder, which gives stronger showers and taps. Whether it suits your home depends on your mains water pressure and flow, which I'll check first.

Unvented cylinders

Unvented cylinders

What is an unvented cylinder?

It's a sealed hot-water cylinder fed straight from the mains, with no cold-water tank in the loft. Because it stores hot water at mains pressure, you get better flow at taps and showers, and it frees up loft space.

What does G3 qualified mean, and why does it matter?

G3 is the part of the Building Regulations (Approved Document G) that covers hot-water storage. Unvented systems hold hot water under pressure, so they have safety devices that must be fitted and set correctly.

By law, unvented cylinders over 15 litres must be installed by a competent person, which in practice means someone holding a G3 unvented hot-water qualification. The installation also needs to be notified to Building Control.

How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend a service every year, and it's often a condition of the cylinder's warranty. A service checks the safety valves, expansion vessel and pressure settings.

Water is coming out of the tundish. What does that mean?

The tundish is the small funnel on the pipe near your cylinder. Water running through it means a safety or relief valve is releasing water, often because of a pressure or temperature problem. It shouldn't be ignored: get it looked at by a G3 qualified engineer.

If it's hot water or steam, switch off the water heating (immersion and boiler) and call.
